George was Baptized on 6 Sep 1828 in St. Ulrich Catholic Church, Deidesheim, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany the son of George Stauder & Anna Maria Groppenbacher.
The family arrived in New Orleans on 12 Dec 1836. Apparently both of George's parent died from yellow fever around July 1837. He was taken in by the Peter Stauder family and trained to be a Tin Smith.
He later moved to Green County, Alabama, under the name of Storter, probably changed to appear less German. He married in 1857 and fathered 5 children prior to the Civil War. He joined the 2nd Alabama Cav. and attained the rank of Sargent. At war's end he surrendered at Forsyth, Georgia.
His wife and 3 of his children died while he was serving during the war. In 1870 he and his two sons George W. & Bembry set out for Florida stopping in Pine Level Florida.
