Hyrum's birth occurred in "the old white house on Calder Park", Mill Creek, Salt Lake County. He was a twin, and the 8th of 15 children born to Mary Bennion and George Calder. As a youth he learned to play the cornet and violin and assisted in the construction and operation of Calder's Park under the direction of his father. Always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission to Scotland Sept. 1896 to Sept. 1898. Following marriage to Agnes Ellen Hamilton on June 27, 1900 he moved to Vernal, Utah and began married life. Like his father, he was an entrepreneur, and in Vernal founded Calder's Bros. Creamery in partnership with his brother Pontha. Later Pontha left the partnership to establish Calder's Confectionery.
Active in civic affairs, he served as mayor of Vernal (1931 to 1936) and as a state senator represented the 5th Utah Senate District (Uintah and Duchesne Counties) from 1933 to 1935.
For 17 years Hyrum served at bishop of the Vernal First Ward (1910 to 1927) followed by 12 years as president of the Uintah Stake (Oct 1931 to Oct 1943). He died in 1946 following a prostate procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota.
He is the father of six children: George Hamilton, James Hamilton, David Hamilton, Vera, Grant H, and Howard Bennion.
