Lewis Alvin Tollman came to Illinois with his parents as a child from Ohio. He enlisted in Company C, 97th Volunteer Infantry of Illinois at the begining of the Civil War. He served three years. On February 25,1866 he married Elisabeth Holmes.They had nine children, all but one survived to adulthood.Benjamin died as a small child. Their other children were: Candace, John, Eliza Jane, Mary, Edward, Lewis Alvin II, Emma Marie and Myrtle Alice.
