"Man Drowns On Cumnor Road"
Fred Appelberg, 71, of Traube and Grant street, Downers Grove, was drowned Saturday at about 3 p.m. while he was trying to wade through water which had covered part of Cumnor road to a depth of nearly four feet. The drowning occured in front of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Tucci, 4421 Cumnor road.
Mrs. Frank Zagol, of 4401 Cumnor road, saw Appelberg fall into the water and summoned her husband, who attempted to rescue the victim.
Police officers, R.J.Dwyer and Lawrence Springborn, aided by Tom Thrall, took turns giving artificial respiration, to no avail.
Mr. Appelberg, who had lived here 60 years, was born in Chicago on August 19, 1875. He was a laborer and handyman, doing odd jobs around the village.
To his friends he was known as "Fritz". He never married. two sisters, Minnie Gansberg of Hinsdale, and Gussie Peters of Chicago, survive.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Willard Glese at the Adams-Winterfield Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Burial was at zion Lutheran, Hinsdale.
