Anna Marie Arp was born April 10, 1902 at Harvard, NE to Henry Arp and Emma (Karras) Arp, who were both born in Germany. Anna was a twin, her brother Chris having been born a few minutes earlier. Anna passed away August 17, 1996 at the Pineview Good Samaritan Home in Valentine, at the age of 94 years. She had 7 brothers and 2 sisters.

Anna grew up and attended rural school and Christian school at Harvard. She was united in marriage with James H. Ballard on May 24, 1922. To this union, 5 children were born. Neal, who died at the age of two months, Treva, Harriet, Raymond and Wanda.

The family farmed in Clay County until 1933 when they moved to Garfield County, where they farmed/ranched. Anna cared for her Mother during her long illness, and until her death. Anna and Jim lived in Hastings, where they both worked at the Navy Depot. They also lived in Wyoming, Oregon and California, while Jim worked on construction. They lived in southern Missouri until 1964, when they moved to Norden, where Anna was Postmistress until 1978, when they moved to Burwell. Her husband Jim passed away in 1985. Anna moved to Valentine in December, 1985, and was resident of Pineview Good Samaritan Home for the past ten years. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church and was member of the Christian Church in Clay Center.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, one son, Neal, her parents, six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by three daughters, Treva Neumeyer, Valentine, Harriett Williams, Memphis, TN and Wanda Staples of Princeton, IL and by one son, Raymond and wife Lorraine, Springview. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, one brother, Albert Arp, Sutton, NE, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Anna loved to garden and grew beautiful flowers and an abundance of food for the family.

Funeral services for Anna Ballard were held Wednesday, August 21, 1996, at 2:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church in Burwell, NE. Burial was in the Burwell Cemetery. Eberle Funeral Home in Burwell, was in charge of the services.
