John Thiede was the son of Hans Heinrich Thiede and Sophie Vietense and the husband of Maria Schumacher. He was born in Gross Bruetz, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. He and his wife emigrated from Germany to America, leaving on the ship 'Hamburg' from the port of Hamburg and arriving in New York 20 Jan 1864. His oldest daughter, Mary, was born at sea. John and his wife had eight children, only three of whom lived to adulthood.
After he emigrated he worked first as a laborer and then became a pioneer grading contractor in Milwaukee. He and his family lived at 668 Madison Street, Milwaukee. He was naturalized as a citizen in Milwaukee on Oct. 26, 1876.
