John Alley was the son of Charles C Alley and Zaider Irene Judd. He married Mary Jane Burwell 29 Jun 1910 Enid Ok. Children were John Newton and Harry Hall. He married 2nd Mildred Trusdale.

" John Alley 68 professor of government at the University since 1911 died at his home at 536 South Lahoma Avenue monday night.
Mr Alley had attended his classes Monday and gone to his farm north of town in the afternoon. The sudden heart attack which caused his death came about 9 p.m. The body is at the Primrose Funeral Home.
Came to University in 1911
Funeral services are pending the arrival of Mrs. Alley, from Nashville, Tenn. where she had gone to visit her daughter and a son. Lt. John Alley from Camp Barkeley, Abilene Tex. Another son Major Harry Alley is with the air force in England.
Mr Alley, head of the department of government at the University for 30 years, came to the University in 1911 as the one member of the department. It was quite a thrill to him to see the enrolment increase from 100 at that time to approximately 2,500.
Settled at Perry
Born in Crete, Neb., July 2 1875, Mr Alley came in a covered wagon with his father, an Irish immigrant adventurer and cattleman to the prairies of Oklahoma and Texas when young. His youth was spent as a cowboy on a Texas ranch and he became skillful at riding and throwing a rope.
But he was glad when his father decided to leave the cattle county and went to the Cherokee country of Oklahoma. The family settled at Perry and from there the young man continued his search for knowledge. He attended high school at Perry and went to Kingfisher Preparatory school. In 1908 he recieved the A.B. degree from Harvard university and his M.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1919. As a member of several political science associations, the government professor kept pace with the developments in his chosen field. He was the author of several books and various articles. "Elements of Government with History and Government of Oklahoma" was published in 1921 "The Government and Politics of a German City" September 1933 and his latest book "City Beginnings in Oklahoma Territory" was published by the University Press in 1939.
As a young man Mr Alley saw service in the Spanish-american War, in 198-99 the Mexican border uprising, in 1916-17and as a major in World War II. Can't read In 1928 and 1929 he traveled and studied at the University of France at Grenoble and in other countries.
He taught in various high schools in Oklahoma and in 1908 went to A and M college, Stillwater as instructor. In 1909 he was made president at the University Preparatory school at Tonkawa which position he held for two years before coming to the University.
His hobby was his two sons, both atraight A students while in school. He was interested in golf and tennis, horeback riding, fishing and camping and in all sorts of sports. He was on the Harvard football team, captain of his team at Kingfisher and inter collegiate tennis can't read Kingfisher.
Mrs S M Salver, neighbor of the Alleys said that Mrs Alley is expected to arrive home Wednesday morning. She reequested that no flowers be sent to the funeral."

Private Rites Planned For John Alley
"Private services for John Alley, University professor of government, will be held at the family residence at 1 pm Thursday. This will be honoring the expressed wish of the former professor who served the University since 1911, member of the family said.
Final rites will be at the Enid cemetery under direction of Primrose Funeral Home.
Rev Joseph S Ewing, vicar or St Jon's Episcopal church, will be the officiating minister.
Bearers will be Dr George L Cross, Bruce Wiley, Dr Cortez A M Ewing, Dr john H Leek, Dr S W Swenson, Dr L A Doran, Dr H Vern Thornton and Lt (jg) H R Tiedeman."

Professor Victim Of Sudden Illness

Major John Alley, a teacher at the University of
Oklahoma since 1911 and for 32 years head of the
school's department of government, died of a heart
attack at 10 pm Monday, at his home in Norman. He
was about 64 years old.

His wife, Mrs Mildred Truesdell Alley, was visiting
at Nashville when Major Alley was stricken and his
two sons, Major Harry Alley and Lieut. John Alley,
were away in the military services.

Major Alley was with the First Gas regiment, the
only organization of its kind in the American
expeditionary forces in the fisrt world war.

At the time of his death he was senior professor in
the department of government.

Major Harry Alley is with the Eighth air corps in
England and Lieut. John Alley is stationed at Camp
Barkley, Texas.

The body is at the Primrose funeral home in Norman.

Major Alley's Rites Delayed

Services for Major John Alley, 64, senior professor in the
department of government at the University of Oklahoma, who
died Monday night of a heart attack at Norman, are pendeing
the arrival of Mrs Alley from Nashville, Tenn.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Jansing-Primrose
funeral home in Norman and will be announces after Mrs Alley
returns Wednesday morning.

The former head of the government department for 32 years,
came to the university in 1911, and prior to that time taught school in various Oklahoma highschools. He also had been a professor at Oklahoma A and M college in Stillwater, and the president of the University Preparatory school, Tonkawa.

Alley was an early day teacher in the Guthrie school system. He taught in the old Logan county highschool in 1903 and 1904. He was born July 2, 1873, at Crete, Nebraska, received his first degree, AB, at Harvard in 1908, and his MA at the University of Wisconsin. He served in the Spanish-American war, 1898-1899: in the Mexican border war, 1916-1917, and World war I, 1917-1918.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge, American Political and
Science association, Oklahoma Political and Science assocation and the Southwestern Social Science association.

His two sons, Harry, a major with the Eighth AAF in England, and John, a lieutenant, at Camp Barkley, Texas, were straight "A" students, and often were said by Major Alley to be his only "hobby." He also is survived by six sisters and one brother.

Mrs Alley was visiting at Nashville when her husband was stricken.
