Son of George Henry and Charlotte Cherry of Denford House, Kintbury, Berkshire
In 1892 he inherited the Lamer Park estate at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire from the widow of Charles Benet Drake Garrard that Charles' father had inherited from Benet Garrard (the 6th and last Baronet of Lamer). A condition of the inheritance was that Apsley adopt the Garrard name and arms. Accordingly, he changed his and his family's surname to Cherry-Garrard by Royal Assent.
He married Evelyn Edith (née Sharpin), daughter of Henry Wilson Sharpin of Bedford ID 230112173
