Per Federal Census and other records, just after the Civil War, William married Mary E. Young; they had the following seven children: Charles J, Mantha A, Myrtle D, Daniel Bertram, Sarah E, Cynthia Ethel & John Whitzel.

Enlisted, as a Sergeant, with the 61st Illinois Volunteer Infantry on 23 January 1962; reenlisted 24 January 1864 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was discharged at the end of the war, 8 September 1865, in Nashville, TN.

A farmer after the war, on 30 December 1900 William was admitted to Danville Branch of one of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938 -- he died there 10 December 1902 from heart failure (mytral insufficiency).
