OBITUARY :
MARY EVELYN (RUTH) MESSNER, 95, of 205 Park St., Waynesboro, died at 5:23 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003 in Quincy United Methodist Home, where she had lived since Feb. 24.

Born Sept. 7, 1907, in Pen Mar, Md., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Staub) Ruth. She lived her early life in the Pen Mar area.

Mrs. Messner attended Smithsburg schools.

She and her husband, John J. Messner, were married Oct. 22, 1936, in Sabillasville. They moved to the Park Street residence in 1964. Mr. Messner died Dec. 3, 1987.

Prior to retiring Nov. 1. 1971, Mrs. Messner was a clerk for W. D. Grant Stores in Waynesboro, Florida and Chambersburg.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Waynesboro, where she sang in the choir.

Mrs. Messner was a member of the national AARP and the Euterpe Club.

She enjoyed attending breakfast clubs, singing, quilting, making ceramics and crocheting.

Mrs. Messner is survived by three daughters, Mary B. Keller of Baltimore, Margaret B. "Peggy" Warner of Waynesboro and Joann E. Zechmeister of Hopkinsville, Ky., six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents. Mrs. Messner was preceded in death by two sisters, Bland Ruth and Anna Johnson, and a brother, Charles Ruth.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 112 E, Second St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery near Rouzerville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

There will be no public viewing at the church. However, friends may call one hour prior to services Wednesday in the social hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 112 E. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268
