Died of diabetes mellitus.

Her parents were Oleander (sic) Cook, born in Scotland, and Mary Ferguson, born in Scotland. The death certificate clearly says Oleander (it is typed) but name was actually Alexander.

Her birthdate is from the death certificate. The informant was her husband J.Q. Buffington. The obituary in the San Luis Obispo paper has a birthdate of 18 June, 1851.

Mary came to California with her parents in 1867. She married James Q. Buffington in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County in 1870. She and James had nine children, three of whom died in childhood.

She was preceded in death by three children, Mary Edith, William Abraham, and James Q. , who all died in 1883 during a diphtheria outbreak. The children died within a week of each other. One can only imagine the terrible loss this had to be for Mary and her husband.

She is survived by her husband and six children, two brothers, three sisters, and five grandchildren.
