Death was due to a coronary embolism with underlying chronic myocarditis. He had undergone an appendectomy on 12 November, 1932.
James and his his first wife Mary had nine children. Three of his children, Mary Edith, William Abraham, and James Q. died in 1883 during a diphtheria outbreak. The children died within a week of each other. One can only imagine the terrible loss this had to be for him and his wife. His brother also had children die in this outbreak.
