Viola K. Eardley
Our dear mother and grandmother, Viola May Kloepfer Eardley, 86, passed from this life on January 4, 1998, at home in Sandy.
She was born July 6, 1911, in Logan, Utah, to Frank Phillip and Rebecca Partington Kloepfer. Vi was raised in Boise, Idaho, with her five brothers, Phil, Dean, Roy, Jack and Dick, all of whom preceded her in death.
Vi came to Salt Lake in 1931 to attend the University of Utah where she met her husband, Kenneth Pixton Eardley. They married on June 12, 1933, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Ken passed away on September 15, 1985.
Vi loved being active and she loved being with people. As a member of the LDS Church, she held numerous positions throughout her life. Most recently she was known as the "flower lady" of the Valley View 9th Ward, where she was a long time member. Her beautiful flower arrangements of roses and iris from her garden brightened the chapel each Sunday. Vi loved flowers, especially her rose garden. In her seventies, Vi worked eight years in the "name extraction program" for the church.
Vi was an original member of the Home Culture Club, whose members have met since the 1940s. She was active in PTA, Pi Kap Wives Club, and various bridge clubs. Ken and Vi were charter members of Willow Creek Country Club where Vi was president of the Women's Association in 1969. She loved golf and bowling, and was in the Grandma's Bowling League until she was in her eighties.
In 1962, Vi became personnel manager of the new ZCMI at the Cottonwood Mall, a position she held for six years. She enjoyed her association with the employees at ZCMI for many years.
Vi loved to travel and took memorable trips to the British Isles, Paris, the Bahamas, and Hawaii. She attended the Statue of Liberty centennial in New York in 1986. Most recently, she attended her granddaughter Shaney's wedding in San Diego in October 1997. At that time, she met her first great-grandchild, newborn Madeline Jones. Vi waited 86 years to become a great-grandmother. She lived to see four grandchildren return from their LDS missions and three graduate from college.
After a stroke in 1991, Vi lived at Highland Cove from 1992 to October 1996 when she broke her hip. She enjoyed the friends she made there.
The family wishes to express thanks to Vi's caregivers this past year, particularly Angie Bennett, Grace Bersick and Vi's physicial therapist, Don Hansen. We are grateful that Vi is finally free from her frail, weak body.
We will all miss Vi's enthusiasm and zest for living and will cherish her memory.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Also survived by her stepsister, Virginia (Charles) McDevitt, Boise, ID; brother-in-law, Gene P. (Aggie) Eardley, St. George, UT; and three sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12 noon at the Valley View 9th Ward, 4101 South 1925 East (Gunderson Lane). Friends may call Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial, 3401 So.
