Kittie was there when her father Lee was murdered. She was there when her son Lee was murdered too.

She never attended school. She stayed home and helped her Granny on the farm.

Kittie visited her mother Ella many times–when it would appear others did not. Photos show her with Ella in 1942 and 1958. You won't see photos of Bertha or L.V. there–or my mother who was her grandchild. I guess some people did not want to visit because Ella lived at the Rusk State Mental Institution.

Kittie once came by the house where we lived in Nacogdoches. I was like, "Who is this?" She was so different than the people we normally entertained. She was charmingly unpolished.

She was Momma's aunt, her mother's sister. She only lived two hours away in Houston, but I only met her that one time. Yet Kittie named one of her children for my momma, Willene.

Kittie married Herman George Hackburth (1912—1966), a church custodian. They had three children. Allene Joyce Hackburth Peek (1949—still living), is the daughter named for Momma because Willene rhymes with Allene. That is what Allene herself told me. The boys were Harvey Herman Hackburth (1953—living) and Leander "Lee" Lambert Hackburth (1960—1990).

(A Recollection--M.E. McWilliams, her great niece)
