HAZEL ELIZABETH WINES MILLER 83 of Front Royal, VA passed away peacefully in Bentonville on June 6, 1995. Hazel was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 30, 1911 to Wade Hamilton Wines and Dora Lee Riley Wines, as their second child and first daughter. She began working at the Silk Mill in Front Royal about 1927.

Hazel married Hilbert Lee Miller, son of Charles Thomas C.T. Miller and Lula Mae

Manuel Miller on June 26, 1935. Surviving are two children - Larry Carver Miller (Faye) and Warren Lee Miller (Janice) together with three grandchildren. Mary, Lisa , and Sharon.

A funeral was held for Hazel at Maddox Funeral Home with burial at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, VA.

Hazel Elizabeth Wines, the second child and first daughter of Wade Hamilton Wines and Dora Lee Riley Wines of Rappahannock County was born September 30, 1911 in Baltimore, MD. Wade and Dora had gone to Baltimore to find work in the mills. Their first child, a son (Herman W. Wines) was also born in Baltimore, Md. When the son became ill he was put in the hospital and died there. So when Hazel also developed pneumonia and the doctor wanted to admit her to the hospital, her parents were afraid that they would lose her too. So in order not to alert anyone, they took their sick child and left in the middle of the night. They took a train to Dora father's homeplace (George Riley) in Amissville. When they arrived there Dora's father, George Riley, met them at the train station in a buckboard wagon. Dora held her sick child to her chest as they drove back over the bumpy road to the family farm. During the ride Hazel's body suddenly fell limp and Dora thought Hazel had died, but her father, George Riley, upon taking the child in his arms said this child is not dead. Her fever had broken and the infant was very much alive, "she is alive!" A miracle indeed and probably the rough ride saved her life by breaking the pneumonia. Hazel carried the scar on her chest all her life where her skin was attached to the ribcage in one spot, but thankfully she lived to be a ripe old age.

At some point her father took a job working for the Remount Station and her family lived in Remount housing. Hazel attended Harmony Hollow School by riding an old black mare over the hill to the school. At 16 she began working at the Silk Mill in Front Royal and was able to eventually have her own apartment near her work. She met Hilbert Lee Miller and married him on June 26, 1935. They had two sons: Larry Carver Miller and Warren Lee Miller.

Hazel was an inspiration to those who knew her. An active member of First Baptist Church and later when she moved to Polk Avenue she became an active member of Marlow Heights Baptist Church teaching Sunday School for many years. She was the best mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother ever!
