James and Mary were the parents of eight children. They owned ground in Indianapolis, Indiana which they traded for a wagon and a team of horses. They puchased eighty acres in Lafayette township, Madison County in the year 1864. They were farmers, their home was a log cabin. the children attended Keller School--a one room brick building and the pupils carried their own slates to write on. The Bodkin farm was located 1/2 mile north of Leach School on county road 300 W on the west side of the road. (a daughter Mary Belle Bodkin said she was born on the spot where the court house now stands in Indianapolis). James and Mary Bodkin also raised two of their grandchildren, Emma and William.
