Stephen Dale Whitney-Wise, 75, of Portland, Oregon, died Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Hopewell House Hospice.

Born in 1947, at Peoria, Illinois, he was the son of the late Roy D. and Mary Frances Easterwood Wise. He grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, and was a graduate of St. Boniface School and Central Catholic High School. He loved music and performed in plays at Columbian Park and high school, and was in a band called The Marksmen that won the Indiana Battle of the Bands.

He was a Navy Veteran and had served in Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, counseling men coming back from Vietnam.

He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the diocese of Lafayette, Indiana. He then joined the Franciscan Order in California. In 1978, Stephen moved to San Francisco and ran St. Anthony's Dining Room, serving meals to people who were homeless, expanding services to a barber shop, skills training classes and other services to help their guests find jobs and housing. He was active in helping the homeless for many years.

The desire to start a family eventually led him to leave the Catholic priesthood and soon after, in 1983, he met his future wife, Patti. Stephen was ordained an Episcopal priest and served as pastor for many years. After he "retired", he traveled the country raising money for Food for the Poor.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patti, and daughter Lilly, of OR; son, Joshua, of MN; four grandchildren; sisters, Janet and Susan, of CA; his twin brother, Richard, of GA.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., June 17, 2023, at St. James Episcopal Church, Tigard, OR. He will be interred at the National Cemetery, Portland, OR.
