Ray Gaines, 66, Route 3, Mitchell, IN, former superintendent of Spring Mill State Park and former Lawrence County Highway Superintendent, died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, May 14, 1972 at Bloomington Hospital.
He was born May 22, 1905 in Bedford to Albert and Mamie Pace Gaines. He was raised in the home of Charles and Sally Gaines after the death of his mother. On March 4, 1925 he married Addie Clements and she survives.
Mr. Gaines had been a farmer and had served as Marion Township trustee. He was Superintendent of the Lawrence County Highway Department from 1959 through 1962. He served as Superintendent of Spring Mill State Park for two and a half years, from 1969 to 1971.
Also surviving are two sons, Raymond of Brazil, IN and Roland of Route 6, Bedford; four daughters, Mary Guthrie, Route 3, Mitchell, Marjorie Wright, Route 2, Mitchell, Jeanette Smith, Route 9, Bloomington and Betty Nash, Route 3, Mitchell; one foster sister, Bertha Snow, Route 6, Bedford; and one aunt, Mabel Raphael, Sellersburg; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell with Rev. Frank Canada and Rev. Franklin Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Knott Cemetery. Friends may call at anytime in Chapel B of the mortuary.
