Melvin was first married to Rita Jean Newberry on August 11, 1961, daughter of Eli Newberry and Virginia Henson; they had a son, Melvin Douglas Dakin on December 21, 1962. He then married Irene McGlothen (shown in photo) on February 04, 1963 in New Richmond, Clermont County, Ohio; she was the daughter of William McGlothen and Josephine Walters. Together they had five children: Billie Jo, Kellita Jo "Kelly", Lisa Louise, Helen Cary and Melvin Scott (preceded them in death). They resided in Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio. He was employed at Ford Motor Company and is one of ten children of Forest Emerson Dakin and Grace Ida Blatt.
