Henry McHenry served under Abraham Lincoln in the Blackhawk Wars and "loved him well" as did all who served with him.

Henry McHenry was a good friend of Mr. Lincoln and his recollections of Mr. Lincoln's life in New Salem are recorded "Herdon's Informants"

After the death of Mr. Lincoln's first love, Ann Rutledge(1813-1835), according to Lincoln biographer Michael Burlingame, Henry McHenry, is quoted as saying that, "after that event he (Mr. Lincoln) seemed quite changed, he seemed retired & loved solitude, he seemed wrapped in profound thought, indifferent, to transpiring events , had little to say, but would take his gun and wander by himself, away from the association even those he most esteemed." Henry McHenry was one of Mr. Lincoln's many friends who "felt compelled to keep watch and ward over Mr. Lincoln." Many of his friends thought he might be suicidal. It was Henry's Brother-in Law Judge Bowling Greene(1786-1742) who finally took Mr. Lincoln into his home until he was well.

The 1860 census lists Henry McHenry's occupation as Hotel Keeper.
