In Memory of Rev. D. C. Harman.
It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of Brother D. C. Harman, which occurred at 11 o'clock on the night of the 23rd ult.
Brother Harman was born April 27th, 1826; made profession of religion in his early life and was baptised into the fellowship of Cob's Creek Baptist church by Rev. James Stone, of Carter Co., Tenn. He afterward moved his membership to Antioch, of which he was pastor for many years. At the time of his death he was a member of Brushy Fork church.
He has been a ready servant of the churches and people of Three Fork, Stony Fork and Mitchell Associations for over 50 years, during which time he has been a constant defender of the faith of the churches of which he was both a member and a servant. In his death the county has lost a patriotic citizen; the neighborhood a hospitable member; the churches a willing servant; the family an affectionate father.
He first married Ellen, the daughter of George Shuffield of Carter Co., Tenn. From this marriage there was born 8 children, 4 of whom preceded him to the spirit land.
After the death of his first wife he was married to Ellen, daughter of Isaac Hagaman, who also preceded him to the great eternity. Of this marriage there was one son who now resides in Mitchell county. Brother Harman was elected by the Three Fork Association at various sessions as clerk and at other sessions as moderator. He has been in feeble health for several years but for the last eight months he has suffered untold agonies of which he was relieved by the death angel in his home on the date above given surrounded by his children grand children and many friends.
During his last illness he often expressed a longing desire to depart and be with Christ which is far better.
After a short religious service conducted by Rev. John Crisp and the writer at 1, p.m., on Christmas day, we followed his body to the hilltop overlooking his home where beneath a beautiful sun lit sky we buried it away in the family grave yard to await the resurrection day where we will all meet again.
The voice from heaven said "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, from henceforth yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them. Sweet be his rest.
C. S. Farthing.

Watauga Democrat Boone, North Carolina Thursday, April 20, 1905.
Rev. D. C. Harman.
On the 23rd of Dec., 1904, the summons of Death came to the home of our dear brother, Elder D. C. Harman, and said: "Come home Brother Harman , and rest from your labors and be free from your suffering."
Brother Harman was born on April 17, 1826, and was 79 years, 8 months and 6 days old. He professed faith in Christ when he was about 18 years old, and joined the Baptist church at Cobb's Creek, Johnson county, Tenn., and in June 1844, moved his membership to Cove Creek Baptist church. In the year 1849, with other members, he took letters and constituted Antioch church, where his membership remained 40 or 45 years. Some years ago he came to Brushy Fork church where he remained a member until his death.
Brother Harman was ordained for the ministry by Antioch church in the year 1852, Elders John A. Farthing and Joseph Harrison constituting a Presbytery.
He was twice married. His first wife, Ellen Shuffield, he married in 1864. By his first wife he had eight children, 6 sons and 2 daughters. Four of the sons had passed over the river of death before their father. His second wife was Nellie Hagaman, they being married in 1872, by which they had one son, who is still living. Both of his wives preceded him to the glory land.
Brother Harman lived a consistent christian life, ever being ready to defend the Baptist faith and doctrines of the Holy Scripture as he understood them. He was a leader in the Baptist denomination and especially in the Three Fork Association. His opinion on any controverted points or doctrine was always taken as sound. He was moderator and clerk of Three Fork Association for several terms, and we very much doubt whether the Baptist of Western North Carolina ever had a man born and reared in the west who was the superior of Brother Harman. He was held in high esteem by his neighbors and the citizens of his county.
He was elected Captain of Co. D., 58th North Carolina Troops in the late war between the States and stayed with his company until his health failed and he had to resign and come home. He was also register of deeds of Watauga county one or two terms. Both positions he held with honor to himself and his people.
In the death of Brother D. C. Harman the Baptists of Watauga county and the church at Brushy Fork has lost a good and faithful member and his children a good and faithful father.
We, the church at Brushy Fork, tender to the children our sincere sympathy in the bereavement.

"A History of Watauga County, NC" by J.P. Arthur 1915:
Brushy Fork Baptist Church was constituted February 26, 1858, by Elders D. C. Harman and Joseph Harrison, with eleven members, to wit: M. C. Harman, Moses Hateley, John A. Hagaman, Sarah Reece, Sally Hagaman, Sarah Hagaman, Susan Danner, Elvira Holsclaw, Elizabeth Hix, Melissa Harman and Sarah Monday. Elder D. C. Harman was the first pastor and served the church in sucession for about twenty-five years, except eight or ten months, when he was in the Civil War.
Antioch was organized largely through the influence of the Rev. D. C. Harman, with the assistance of Messrs. Dyer and Wiley Harman, as well as members of the Hix and Ward families.

D. C. Harman resigned his office as Captain of Co. D, on March 12, 1863, after the officers of the regiment submitted a letter to Col. Palmer, dated March 3, 1863, suggesting D. C. Harman be appointed Chaplain of the Regiment.
Col. Palmer affirmed the appointment and accepted D.C.'s resignation on March 14, 1863, forwarding both to the Commanding officer, General Joseph E. Johnston, at Chattanooga, Tenn and were sent from there to the War Dept. March 18th, 1863, by Gen. Benj. S. Ewell, acting in the absence of Gen. Johnston.

Capt. D. C. Harman's letter of Resignation:

Camp of the 58th Regt. NC Vols.
Big Creek Gap, Tenn March 12/63
General
I hereby tender my resignation of the office of Captain of Company D 58th Regt. N.C. Vols. to take effect this day.
The reason that impels me to this step is that I consider, having been for years a Minister of the Gospel, that I am unfitted by the want of Military talent and acquirements for this position which I now hold in the Army.
I certify that I am not indebted to the Confederate States on any account whatever and that there is due me from the Confederate States pay as Captain from the 31st. day of Dec. 1862 to this date.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
Your Obt. Servt.

D. C. Harman
Capt. Co. D 59th Regt. N.C. Vols

Genl. S. Cooper
Adjutant of Inspector General
Richmond, Va

D.C. was replaced as commander of Co. D by Benjamin Franklin Baird.

Note: Watauga County was not formed until 1849 from from parts of Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes, and Yancey counties. So Drewry was actually born in Ashe County.
