Colonel Robert Haden Abercrombie was born on 11 September 1838 in Cross Keys, Alabama, to Milo Bolling Abercrombie and Sarah Lee Haden. He graduated with a law degree from Cumberland University in Tuskegee, Alabama. Col Abercrombie married Frances Rebecca Gary on 11 January 1860. They lived in Macon County, Alabama. Their children were Robert, Frances, Annie, Newton, Robert, and Thomas Abercrombie. None of their sons lived to adulthood. After Col Abercrombie was wounded in action during the Civil War, he practiced law in Tuskegee and Gadsen, Alabama, and was considered "a gentleman of the highest personal and professional standing." Col Robert Abercrombie was accidentally shot and killed in Gadsen, 8 June 1891, aged 52, by his son-in-law, who mistook him for a chicken thief, and was buried at the Tuskegee City Cemetery.
