Dr. Joseph E. Varner

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Dr. Joseph E. Varner, died at 3:30 p.m. July 4, 1995, in St. Louis, Mo.

Dr. Varner received a PhD in biochemistry at Ohio State University. He retired from Washington University of St. Louis last fall due to illness. He served as chief scientist of the USDA Competitive Research Graduate Program in Washington, D.C., in 1986. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986 and the National Academy of Sciences in 1984. He has traveled worldwide, speaking at many scientific conventions. His life work has been plant biology.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Varner; a son, Lee of New York City, N.Y.; three daughters, Lynn of Detroit, Mich., Karen of St. Louis, Mo., and Beth of near Washington, D.C.; a brother, Robert E. Varner of Nasport; two stepchildren; and four grandchildren.

Dr. Varner was preceded in death by his parents, George and Inez Varner; and two brothers, George G. Varner and David O. Varner.

The body will be cremated and a memorial service conducted at a later date.

Mayer Funeral Home, 4356 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.
