James Swift was the son of Martin and Mary Gavin Swift. He was the brother of Mrs. Abigail Flynn, Mrs. Mary Ellen McGugin, Martin II, John Thomas Swift, Aloysus Bartholmew Swift, Francis Swift, and Mrs. Jane Florence Bruty.
James married Ms. Ettie Lindsey January 19 1887 in Washington County, Iowa to this union two children were born: William Lloyd Swift and Mrs. Myrtle M. Mahin.
