May Alles Wardlow passed away in Louisville, Kentucky on May 11, 2023, at 100 years of age. May was born in Louisville to Caroline Deckmann Cruze and Clyde Clarence Cruze.

She was the oldest of four children (Clarence Cruze, Ruth (Russ), Martha Jane (Smith) and all of whom preceded her in death.

May graduated from Louisville Girls High. After graduation she worked at Old Nicholas Hospital in Louisville and later at Fort Hayes Military Base Transport Division in Columbus, Ohio.

She married three times. Her first husband was Kenneth H. Smith, with whom she had three children (Edward Russell, William Patrick and Byron Douglas).

In 1960 her second marriage was to Carl N. Alles, a sergeant in the US Army, who was stationed in Columbus, Ohio where May was working. They were transferred to Cadiz, Spain and later to the Azores (7/1/69 – 7/15/71) satisfying her love of travel. Carl died in 1982.

Subsequently May worked at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio, where she met her third husband John Richard (Jack) Wardlow, who shared her love of dancing. May and Jack entered many dance competitions as evidenced by her extensive collection of sparkling dresses.

After Jack's death May returned to Louisville where her youngest son Byron was her constant companion until his death in 2021. They were members of Immanuel United Church of Christ whose pastor is Rachel F. Small Stokes. At church May was noted for wearing many interesting hats to the services.

May was an excellent cook who provided numerous Christmas cookies to the whole family as well as prepared feasts at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She spent many hours in her flower garden enjoying the numerous fragrant blossoms.
