He died of small pox while in the Union Army at Fort Delaware Hospital. His military records has his name spelled many different ways ie Ovat, Overtt, Ovet, Ovit, and the correct spelling of the name Ovitt.
Enlisted on 25 Dec 1861, mustered into Company Batty D, New York 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment on 26 Dec 1861.
Mustered out on 26 Oct 1863 at Fort Delaware, DE. The following is from The New York State Adjutant General Report;

*OVERTT, ABIJAH.—Age, 18 years. Enlisted, December 25,
1861, at West Day; mustered in as private, Co. D, December
26, 1861, to serve three years; died, October 26, 1863, at Small
Pox Hospital, Fort Delaware; also borne as Ovatt and Ovitt;
also borne on muster-in roll, Co. H.
