Death Report Hamilton Advertiser - Saturday 17 April 1869
DEATH OF AN OLD NATIVE The death is recorded this week of Alex. Aiton, weaver, residing at 2 Haddow Street, an old native of the town, whose name, it will be remembered, was prominently mentioned in connection with the interesting gathering held in the Town hall about 2 years ago. Aiton was born on 14th April, 1783, and died on 15th April, 1869 (Thursday morning last) , having thus, the day before his death, reached the eighty-sixth year of his age. Deceased (whose father was at one time a linen merchant in Townhead Street,) has left altogether 119 descendants - his own children numbering 12; grandchildren, 58; great-grandchildren, 46; and great-great-grandchildren, 3 ; total , 119 - nearly all of whom are at present alive.
(I think the interesting gathering mentioned above would have been A DINNER TO HAMILTONIANS OF LAST CENTURY which took place in the Town Hall on 5/10/1866 and was reported in both the Hamilton Advertiser and North British Daily Mail on 6/10/1866. These reports gave no further details on his life.)
