Jim is the son of John Walling [Wallen] from Powell Valley,Scott,Virginia and serena Ellen ''rena'' Adams from Rockcastle,Kentucky.

James had 26 brothers, sisters and half brothers and sisters of which there were four sets of twins. Only one set is known.
