TWO DIE IN LUKFATA AREA FIRE/EXPLOSION

A structure fire that followed an explosion claimed the lives of two female residents southwest of Broken Bow early Wednesday.

The report of the fire off Old Broken Bow Highway came to Broken Bow Fire Department at 3:36 a.m. when a neighbor heard the explosion and called an emergency number.

The Broken Bow Fire Department responded with 11 firefighters in a fire engine and four other trucks to the fire site off Old Broken Bow Highway southwest of the city.

One section of the house was already destroyed by fire upon arrival of the BBFD personnel, who contained the fire and kept it from spreading.

The firefighters reported that they found the burned bodies of the two fire victims inside.

The names have not yet brrn released by authorities. Also responding were McCurtain County emergency Medical Services and the McCurtain County Sheriff Department.

A State Fire Marshal's investigator was at the scene by noon Wednesday and the U.S. Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm (ATF) agents were expected to probe what caused the explosion that apparently set the house afire.

A state medical examiner's agent was due to perform autopsies and confirm the identity of the deceased.

BBFD firefighters were at the scene from a little before 4 a.m. and until after 8 a.m. and one firefighter remained in scene to keep a watch over the burning embers.
