It appears that John Henry is the son of Alexander Henry and Mary Ann "Polly" Sorrels.
He is a brother to Ephraim, Joseph, Nancy, Selia Susanna Henry Blanton, Martha J Henry Dillard, James, Thomas and Alexander Yade Henry. Their mother died in 1845 and their father then married Sarah unknown and Alexander Yade Henry was born to this couple.

At the age of 20 John enlisted in NC 16th infantry, Company A. He mustered out a year and a half later.

John married Hannah Johnson and they are the parents of at least one child, Joseph Dallas Henry, who would also die at the asylum (he of syphilis).

In 1880 he is listed as married but he lives without wife or children and is shown as a farmer, unable to read or write. He appears to share a home with the George Clayton family in Scotts Creek, NC.
