Mary Elizabeth {aka "Eliphe"} Patterson was born Oct. 4, 1866 in Texas.{{Tombstone date in error--as her mother Sarah's death ~1866}}. Her parents were Drury Payten {"Paten"} Patterson b. c1844 TN and Sally Sansom {Sarah A. G. Sansom} b.1846 Tyler Co., TX. (these parents were married 1865 in Gonzales Co., TX). Her father, Payten, was killed within the Gonzales area 1872, in connection with the Taylor/Sutton Feud, some say by Mannen Clements, a cousin to John Wesley Hardin. Clements was arrested, 1877 but won acquittal in 1878. {Payten had allegedly befriended Hardin} Her mother, Sally, died about 1866. Mary Elizabeth and her sister, Sarah, were raised by their maternal grandparents, Thomas Lackey Samson(1818-1905) and Mary Renegar Sansom (1818-1892), long time residents of the same Gonzales area.

Payten had married second to Celia Ann "Annie" Sutton and Celia befriended Elizabeth and her sister Sarah even after Payten's demise.

Mary Elizabeth Patterson married Joseph Aladin Nunez in Gonzales, Texas, ca1884. and was barely age 18 at this marriage. Joe Nuinez/Nunez was is dire need of a mother for his seven children. Joe had been on the run from Louisiana authorities from about 1873 sometimes altered the spelling of his name from Nunez to Nuinez.

Gonzales County records reflect that in 1887/88 Mary Elizabeth inherited property. She and Aladin Nuinez sold this property following her estate settlement from her family. Some say this was perhaps the first recording of Aladin using an "i" in spelling Nuinez which has remained that way, even today, for the Texas side of the family. The reason for Aladin to changes his family name spelling can only be speculated about – hiding from law, Americanize a Spanish name, etc.

About this time Aladin's brother advised him it was safe for him to return to Louisiana and they apparently returned in 1888. Family tradition indicates it took then three months by wagon to make the move. THey relocated to Cameron Parish in Louisiana.

The 1900 census of Cameronm LA, enumerates Aladin and Mary Eliz. with: 8 children - 3 born TX, 5 LA
