Joseph Aladin Nunez was born July 11, 1839 - the son of Celestin & Marie Carmelite(Broussard)Nuinez. Celestin descends from Joseph Nunez a Spanish soldier of 1779 who helped defend Louisiana against the British. Marie descends from the Acadian leader Alexander Broussard "dit Beausoleil".

Joseph married ca1865,to Marie-Denise Suire, born 18 Mar 1846 in Abbeville, Vermilion, La. {As Mary Nuinez 1849?-1883 she is buried at Woods Cemetery Yorktown, Dewitt Co., TX} There were two children born to them:

i. Joseph - 15 Jan 1866 in Abbeyville, LA
ii. Alex - 28 Sept 1867in Abbeyville, La

For a period of time Joseph Aladin Nunez was in trouble with the law – it is alleged he killed a negro and later a white man. Supposidly the negro was a slave who failed to tip his hat at Nunez as he rode by the negro on his horse. ~~ There is a prominent La Supreme court case found in Louisiana legal records and which is studied by law students –"Appeals":OPELOUSAS JUNE 1874 005 - State of Louisiana vs Nunez No.832.
The period of time between the children born in Louisiana and those born in Texas (some +/-6 years) is indicative of perhaps incarceration time in Louisiana.

Aladin Nunez and family are believed to have moved to Texas about the time of this legal exoneration in 1872-74, with his wife Mary Denice and their two children. Tradition indicated he settled in the Shiloh community of DeWitt , County, TX, near Yorktown while census records of Gonzales County, TX, Prct 4, find Joseph {Aladin} enumerate with family including children born in Texas:

iii. Mary b. c1872 TX {m. Tom May in TX}
iv. Olivia b. c1875 TX
v. Ava b. c1877 TX{Avia Eva- m. Logue in LA}
vi. Albert b. c1880 TX {m. Miller 1901 LA}
vii. Rudolph b. c1883/4 TX–the year mom died

This Nuinez home is near the John Duderstadt family in the Rock Creek Community of Gonzales County, TX; the closeness of Duderstadt & Nuinez families joined two members of each family in marriage. Dewitt County records indicate Aladin purchased half interest in 247.5 acres of land in 1882 and sold this property in 1884.

Following Mary's death, Joseph Aladin married again to {Mary}-Elizabeth Patterson, in Gonzales, Texas, ca1884. She was born Oct. 4, 1866 in Texas and was barely 18 at this marriage. Elizabeth, an orphan, was raised by her maternal grandparents, Thomas L. and Mary Renegar Sansom, long time residents of the same Gonzales area.

Gonzales County records reflect that in 1887/88 Mary Elizabeth inherited property. She and Aladin Nuinez sold this property following her estate settlement from her family. Some say this was perhaps the first recording of Aladin using an "i" in spelling Nuinez which has remained that way, even today for the Texas side of the family. The reason for Aladin to changes his family name spelling can only be speculated about – hiding from law, Americanize a Spanish name, etc.

The eldest daughter of Aladin and Marie-Denise was Mary born 1872. For some reason about the time of Aladins marrage to Mary Elizabeth her father enrolled Mary in the Cuero Catholic School for a year. At age 16 Mary Nuinez married Thomas A. May in Gonzales the year 1888. They made their home in Wharton County, TX, and had children: Albert Joseph, Maggie J, Annie T, Georgia B, Eva Elizabeth, Jake C & Electra L. MAY. Mary died in1953 and is buried in the Wharton City Cemetery with her husband.

About this time Aladin's brother advised him it was safe for him to return to Louisiana and they apparently returned in 1888. Family tradition indicates it took then three months by wagon to make the move - settling in the Cameron Louisiana area.

The 1900 census – Cameronm LA, enumerates Aladin / with: 8 children - 3 born TX, 5 LA
