Schulyer Clinton Rice was the son of Francis Marion Rice and Mary Elizabeth (Laphan) Rice. Schulyer married Mary Ethel Stephenson in 1914 in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. Schulyer and Mary had 4 children, Pollyanna (Rice) Saltmarsh, William Arthur Rice, Donald Oscar Rice and Philip Marion Rice. Schulyer and Mary separated in 1920 and later divorced. In 1922, Schuyler was admitted to Central State Insane Asylum and was still living there in the 1930 and 1940 censuses. About 1940, Schuyler moved to Enid, Garfield County, Oklahoma.

Two weeks before Schulyer died, a friend (Ira D. Kauble) living in Enid, Oklahoma visited Schulyer in the hospital. Schulyer told the nurse that he was never married and didn't have any children and registered in the hospital as single.

Schulyer's brother, Clarence Rice, arranged his funeral and return to Indiana for burial and spelled his name Schyler when he ordered his government tombstone in 1969, but Schulyer spelled his name with a "u" (Schulyer) on his signature on his WWI draft registration.

Schulyer served in Indiana PVT Co. B, 30th Infantry during WWI and served in the Phillipines.
