Richard "Dick" Wayne Allfree, age 96, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Northridge Village in Ames, Iowa surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave., Ames. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

The son of James K. and Myra Jane (Baker) Allfree, Dick was born at his maternal grandparents' home in Newton, Iowa, on December 10, 1926. He attended schools in Colfax and Newton.

On February 28, 1944, at age 17, Dick began active duty in the United States Navy. After basic training in Idaho, he was sent to the Pacific theater of World War II. He served as a special artificer third class in Western Australia and the Philippines and worked on optical instruments for submarines. He enjoyed his time in the Navy, especially in Australia.

Dick was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and returned to Newton, where he graduated from high school in 1948. While attending a sporting event, he met Beverly Emmack, and the two were married at the Metz Church in rural Jasper County, Iowa on April 17, 1949.

Dick was trained as an accountant at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. The family moved to Ames in 1952, where he was an accountant for Iowa State University in administration and later for the Iowa State University Engineering Research Institute.

Dick was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II, the Iowa Patrol, and the United States Submarine Veterans. He was also a member of the First Methodist Church in Ames.

Dick enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing, gardening, and yard work. He also enjoyed woodworking and spending time with their grandchildren. Dick and his family enjoyed many vacations in their camper and Airstream Travel Trailer.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, two half-brothers, two sisters, and an infant son, Chris. He is survived by his sons Guy of Story City, Craig of Des Moines, and Kirk of Ames and daughters Kim Hasstedt and Jill Allfree, both of Ames. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kelly Verhage (Jake Verhage) of Underwood, Iowa; Katie Hasstedt, Indyca Allfree and Dakotah Allfree, all of Ames; and Kristopher Hasstedt of Knoxville, Tennessee; by his great-grandchildren Cody, Kaylee, Hattie, Jacob and Birdie Verhage, all of Underwood, and Finn Hasstedt and Ezra Anderson of Ames; and long-time family friend Lynn Nehls of Ames.
