Opal K. Fisher, 101, of Monticello, Ill., formerly of Bement, Ill., passed away at 6:16 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2008, at the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello, Ill.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the Bement Township Cemetery, Bement. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the Roux-Hinds Funeral Home, 348 N. Piatt St., Bement. Pastor Mark Smith will officiate.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Bement United Methodist Church or the Piatt County Nursing Home, Halcyon Unit.

Opal was born on July 1, 1906, in Strasburg, Ill., a daughter of John J. and Addie Venters Durst. She married Warren E. "Hugh" Fisher on July 4, 1924, in Decatur, Ill., and he passed away on September 25, 1990.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Schenck of Bloomington, Ill., and Kathleen (Doug) Carpenter of Newton, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, Fred Schenck; daughter, Joan (Richard) Auth; brother, Eldon Durst; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Mrs. Fisher was a graduate of Bement High School, class of 1924. She was a member of the Bement United Methodist Church, a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Albert Parker American Legion Post. She worked for many years as a postal clerk at the Bement Post Office. In 1984 she and her husband were chosen to be Mr. and Mrs. Bement. Both Mrs. Fisher and her husband had always been active in the Democratic Party. Since 1999 she had been a resident of the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello, Ill. Before that time, she and her husband had lived in Tatman Village, Monticello, Ill. for many years.

Roux-Hinds Funeral Home, 348 N. Piatt St., Bement, Ill. has been entrusted with the family's loved one for Opal's services.
