Eleanor Sylvia DeGagne died Wednesday January 18, 2012 at the LaVerendrye General Hospital.
She was born September 28, 1933 in Selkirk Manitoba to Peter and Mary Macedon. When she was two the family moved to the Rainy River District settling in on the farm in Devlin; they stayed there for 8 years till the death of her father.
Her mother remarried in August of 1949 to Wilmot Godin and the family moved to Fort Frances.
As a young woman, Eleanor worked as a housekeeper at local tourist camps, and at LaVerendrye Hospital as a nurse's assistant.
On November 26, 1952, she married Laurence J. DeGagne, they settled in Atikokan and started their family.
In June of 1958 they returned to the Rainy River area, first in Stratton and then in 1960 they returned to Crozier to take over Laurence's parents business, the Country Store. Eleanor clerked there for 32 years with Laurence. In 1992 they sold the business moving to Fort Frances.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband Laurence, October 27, 1994; father Peter Macedon, November 21, 1947; mother Mary Godin, December 10, 1998 and sister Patricia Macedon in infancy.
She leaves behind her children Caroline and husband Wayne Cullingham, June DeGagne all of Kenora, Lawrence DeGagne and wife Terri of Thunder Bay; grandchildren Tanis, April, Jessica, and Janelle and great grandchildren Brady, Cloe, Levi, Julia and Danica; brothers Henry Macedon and David Godin; sisters Christine and husband Rodney Roderick and Carol Pigeon as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Graveside service Friday, January 20, 2012, 1 p.m. at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario.
