Joseph Hamilton, son of James and Margaret (Hamilton) Steele, was born at Pilot Grove, Lee County, Iowa, on November 15, 1846, and departd this life at the home of his son, James W. Steele of Denver, Colorado, (after suffering a paralytic stroke) on March 27, 1931, at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 12 days.

He was married to Pamelia G. Bonsall, April 12, 1874, who preceded him in death on June 9, 1928. To this union were born two sons and five daughters, one daughter preceded him death at the age of five years. Those left to moun his loss are: James M. and Whitten C. Steel of Denver, Colorado; Florence E. Eden and Lena L. Steele of Alexandria, Nebraska; Jessie W. Hinkle of Mason City, Nebraska; Edith M. Eden of Belvidere, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

He joined the church (Presbyterian) at an early age and remained true to his faith until the end. He was one of the early settlers of Saline County, coming to Western, Nebraska, from Iowa when a boy."
