James Kenneth Land was a son of James Madison Land (1815-1871) and Ann Elizabeth Baxter (1818-1854). He was married to Alice Elizabeth Brinson (1856-1929, daughter of Simon Speight Brinson and Sarah McCoy) on 7 Dec. 1871. James had served in the Confederate Army in Co. K, 2nd NC Infantry Regiment. He enlisted as a private, 3 June 1861, Craven Co., NC, age 20. During the course of the war, one of his toes was shot off, and he was captured by the yankees. At the end of the war, he walked home.

James K. Land and Alice E. Brinson had eight children: James Jeremiah Land (1872-1938), Arthur Thomas Land (1874-1937), Maude Elma Land (1878-1958, Mrs. Joseph W. Watson), Edmund Josephus Land (1880-?, went to Baton Rouge, La.), Herbert Kenneth Land (1882-1970), Leon Llewellyn Land (1885-1958), Frederick Guy Land (1889-1906) and Alice Grace "Allie" Land (1893-1985, Mrs. John R. Taylor).
