David was the son of Crawley and Nancy Stuart Howse. He was a farmer. First, he was married to Lucy Ann Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of Lt. Col. Lewis and Mariah Holt Clark Stuart. They had eight children. After Lucy passed, he married Letitia Frances Tate Hazelwood. They had ten children. Their daughter, Elena Garspara Howse, married James Henry Nicholson, of Haywood County.
