Joseph Claine Baird, 85, of Richmond passed away, Thursday, September 22, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.

Claine was born July 19, 1937 in Lewiston, Utah to Ralph Vernon and Melba Elizabeth Obray Baird. He married Gwen Marie Whitehead on December 2, 1961. They were later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.

Claine's family was a tremendous source of pride and joy for him. He provided many opportunities for his family to work and play together creating lasting memories and bonds. Water skiing, camping, snowmobiling, and supporting each other in their hobbies and pursuits were some of Claine's favorite ways to spend leisure time with his family.

For much of his life, Claine ran the family dairy farm in Lewiston. In 1995, he sold the farm and went to work at Utah State University. He liked to stay busy and enjoyed working. He retired from Utah State at the age of 80. He had many friends at Utah State and he loved seeing them when he went to work each day.

Claine loved people and horses and many of his hobbies throughout his lifetime reflected those interests. During his younger years he participated in chariot racing and enjoyed participating in Lewiston's 4th of July celebrations. He cherished weekly horse rides with his friends. He often invited his children or grandchildren to come along on those rides so they could enjoy the mountains together. A great storyteller, he would often tell his family of his adventures when younger, of his horse rides, or pass along a funny joke he knew his kids would enjoy.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many callings throughout his life and blessed the lives of many.

Claine loved living in his log home at the top of the hill in Richmond. Many hours were spent watching wildlife, weather and enjoying the beauty of Cache Valley. We will miss the exhilarating (treacherous) climb up the gravel lane and watching the view with you.

Claine is survived by his children, Teri (Lyle) Huffaker of Boise, Idaho; Karen (Don) Hyatt of Bluffdale, Utah; JoAnne (Todd) Burrows of Paradise, Utah; Todd (Julie) of Ogden, Utah; Tony (Becky) of Smithfield, Utah; Chad (Sally) of Heber City, Utah; Mandi (Jared) Gilbert of Kaysville, Utah; as well as by his 35 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 30th at the Richmond 4th ward chapel, 150 S 100 E, Richmond, Utah. A viewing at the chapel will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The funeral will begin at noon. Burial will be in the Lewiston City Cemetery.
