Edith Mae Freed, age 89, passed from this life on May 13, 2021, at her care home in Phoenix. Edith was born on November 27, 1931 in Gridley, Illinois on her family farm. She lived there with her parents, Albert and Rose (Blunier) Funk, and two sisters and one brother. She attended a one-room schoolhouse during her elementary years.

The family moved to town where Edith attended Gridley High School and fell in love with Allan Freed. Allan participated in many sports where Edith was one of the cheerleaders on the sidelines. They graduated from high school in 1949 and were married on October 8, 1950. During this period, Edith was a telephone operator in the big town of Gridley. Together in 1961, after moving to Flanagan, Illinois, Edith and Allan confessed their faith in God, and became members of the Apostolic Christian Church.

In the Spring of 1963, Edith became the last member of her family of six to raise her hand in agreement to move to Phoenix, which they accomplished later that summer.

Edith was dedicated to serving God and others. Her example of putting God first, her husband, family and others second, and herself last, is an example that her family claims is almost perfect. She loved hosting people in their home for delicious meals and overnight stays. Her heart was always willing, open, and full of love. She also lovingly took care of her husband through his illness during his last years.
The Bible verse which embodies Edith's gentle spirit is: Proverbs 31:28 "Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

Edith is survived by daughter Alana Schrenk of Tempe, son Thomas (wife Kathy) of Greenfield, Indiana, daughter Nancy Kokanovich (husband Jon) of Phoenix, son Steven (wife Kelly) of Chandler, son Richard (wife Jennifer) of Phoenix, fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great grandchildren, one brother, Jim Funk of Peoria, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews who called her "Aunt Edie". She is preceded in death by her husband, Allan, and two sisters, Shirley and Sarah.

Visitation will be held on May 19, 2021, at Hansen's Mortuary Chapel at 8314 N. 7th St., Phoenix, Arizona 85020 at 9am. The funeral service will be at 10 am at the mortuary chapel. Immediately following the service, interment is at Resthaven Cemetery at 4310 E. Southern Avenue, Tempe 85042.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity such as: Loving Shepherd, Gateway Woods, Salvation Army, or a Hospice of your choice.

The family would like to thank you for all your support, prayers, cards, phone calls, etc. through the years. We feel blessed beyond words.
