George Henry Bender, the fourth oldest of the nine children born to Henry C. Bender and Margaret M. Rossbach, was born on December 28, 1895, near Cornlea, NE. He was not baptized in St. Francis Church, Humphrey, as were the older children of the family. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in the local school, quitting school before he was thirteen. He farmed with his father and brothers until March 1, 1946. He then traveled the States west of the Mississippi and ended up in Los Angeles, where he found work in various hospitals.
