Elzy, as she was known, was just twenty-one years old when she was informed that her husband had been killed in France during World War I. She at age 22 and her young son, Jesse, are found living with her parents, James and Carrie Dover in Catoosa County, Georgia in the 1920 census there. Also in the household is Martha Harp, 93, grandmother of Carrie.

On December 22, 1926 in Hamilton County, Tennessee, she married William Cecil Bowman. Their daughter Carolyn was born in 1928 and the family is found in Boynton, Catoosa County, Georgia in the 1930 census. In the household along with the couple are Jesse, her son, Carolyn, their daughter and her mother, Carrie Dover and sister, Myrtle Dover.

The family is found in Fort Oglethorpe, Catoosa County, Georgia in the 1940 census. The record indicates that William Cecil, 41, owned a retail grocery store and gas and oil station and Elzy, 42, was a saleswoman in the business. Also in the household is Carolyn, age 12.

The 1950 Catoosa County, Georgia census registers William C Bowman, 51; Mary E Bowman, 52. Their occupations are shown are grocers in retail food store. Also in the household, is Mary's mother, Carrie Freeney, 72, widowed; her occupation shown as cook in school.

At some time after this census, the family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee where in the obituary of her brother James who died in 1951, it is noted that he is survived by a sister Mrs. W C Bowman who lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
