7809 Rifleman Bamford, 4th Battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps. The 4th battalion did not deploy to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War until Dec 1901. They sent a number of volunteers to serve in the Mounted Infantry. After the occupation of Bloemfontein, Alderson's Mounted Infantry, including Roberts' Horse, accompanied Major General Broadwood on an expedition to Ladybrand leading to a sharp rear guard action on 30 Mar 1900 near Sannah's Post. Their camp was shelled on 31 Mar 1900 and as they moved west, they were attacked by 600 Boers from a deep spruit and 155 men were killed or wounded. Rifleman Bamford was killed in action at Sannas Post on 31 Mar 1900. He was buried in Sannaspos Military Cemetery.
