On Sunday, March 12, 2023, Mary Herman, loving wife, and mother of two children, passed away at the age of 96.
Mary was born on Oct. 4, 1926, on a farm in Coloma to Dominick and Rosalie (Gagliano) Greco, where she learned the joys of making things grow and making food taste amazing! While Mary was not highly educated, she had the wisdom of the ages.
Mary spent the major portion of her life raising her two sons, working at the Watervliet Paper Mill, and tending to a 20-acre fruit farm with her husband, Bud. No one ever wondered what was on Mary's mind, or what she thought about things. In the true spirit of her Sicilian ancestry, she was always ready to voice an opinion.
Having grown up in the Great Depression there was never a lack of food in the house. And she always seemed to be canning and freezing food from her abundant garden. She would always take the time to share fruit and vegetables from the farm and garden with family and friends that were in need.
Her love for the little ones was ever apparent. Whenever a child was in her presence, the world revolved them.
After 59 years of marriage, her husband, Reinholt "Bud" Herman, passed less than 24 hours after Mary. She was preceded in death by her brothers: Joe, Steve, and Tony Greco. Also her sisters: Neva, Josie, Pat and Kathy.
Surviving are two sons: Peter and Mark Maniscalco; step-daughter, Sherry Slavoff; a sister, Rosie and brother, Dominick. Also surviving are four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Mary lived a good and long life and while she will be missed, her spirit and stories will live on.
Services honoring her will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma where the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Coloma Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mary may be given to Salem Lutheran Church.
