ALBUQUERQUEAN DIES IN CRASH:Albuq Journal Feb. 23, 1957
Flagstaff, Arizona, - Alex Chavez, 19, from Albuquerque, a sailor stationed on the U.S.S. Pine Island, was killed Friday when the auto he was driving left the road and overturned 20 miles east of Flagstaff on US-66. State Highway Parol officers said Chavez apparenly went to sleep at the wheel. He was thrown from the car, the patrol said, and was crushed when it landed on him. Three other sailors occupants of the vehicle were injured but none seriously. They also were attached to the U.S.S. Pine Island.
Alex had visited his parents two weeks before accident.
Alex is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alejandro Chavez at 323 California SE, Albuquerque, NM. He joined the Navy more than a year ago. He is survivied by two brothers, Pete Chavez and Gilbert Chavez who also was in the Navy; and five sisters, Mary Chavez, Mrs. Tillie Madrid, Mrs Celestia Madrid, Mrs. Marcella Ortega and Mrs. Celina Gallegos all living in Albuquerque, NM.
The body was returned to Albuquerque for services and burial. Sadly to say, the family had not been informed of the death until contacted by the Journal.
