She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas on Sept. 6, 1942, and professed her vows on March 12, 1945. Sister Miriam Rita completed her undergraduate studies at Mount Aloysius Junior College in Cresson, and at College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa. She obtained her master's degree from Villanova University in Church History.
Sister Miriam Rita's ministries spanned 61 years and included teaching elementary school and high school in the dioceses of Brooklyn, Rockville Center, Scranton, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Altoona-Johnstown. In addition to her teaching ministries, she was dedicated to Religious Education and Parish ministries for over 50 years. She also served in the Finance Offices of Mercy Hospital in Johnstown and the Provincialate in Dallas, Pa.
During her retirement, she continued to serve her Sisters at Mercy Center, Dallas, Pa., as a Eucharistic Minister. She also supported the operation of the gift shop and assisted in mail distribution. Sr. Miriam Rita was blessed with the gift of years, and she took pride in being the oldest Sister at Mercy Center. She celebrated her 100 year birthday at a festive gathering of Sisters, family and friends at Mercy Center in August 2021.
Sr. Miriam Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: James, Alvin, Lawrence and Norbert; and her sisters, Louise and Alice. She is survived by her sister, Eleanor Strittmatter of Ebensburg; 26 nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
The celebration of her life will begin with visitation at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, at Mercy Center Chapel, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at Mount Aloysius Cemetery, Cresson. Memorial contributions in memory of Sister Miriam may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, P.O. Box 370, Dallas, PA 18612.
