Mrs. Catharine Kercher Smith was born near Ashland, Ohio, on August 24th, 1847, daughter of Elizabeth Moyer and William Kercher Sr. She had nine brothers and sisters. She died in her home in Newton on August 9th, 1931. If she had survived 15 more days she would have turned 84. On November 23rd of 1865, she married Samuel H. Smith at Goshen, Ind. where they lived on a farm until 1873, when the family moved to Peabody, Kansas. In 1879 they moved to Newton, where they lived together until his death in 1922. They had five children, Daniel who passed away at 6 years old, Mrs. Frank Stephens of Topeka, Ks., Mrs, Willis Bowlus of Fremont, Ohio, Mrs. Josephine Williamson and W.K. Smith of Newton. She also left behind twenty-one grand children and fifteen great grandchildren.
