Constance "Connie" Marie Martin Achtzehn was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1940 and went home to the Lord on May 10, 2017 in Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sergeant Major Robert and Pauline Martin, and husband of 37 years, Samuel Achtzehn. Connie is survived by three siblings, Bob Martin and his wife Betty, Joe Martin, and Kathy McDaniel and her husband Ben. She is also survived by two daughters, Lynne Little and her husband John, and Amy Leighton and her husband Chip, as well as seven grandchildren, Erin and Kelly Little, and Will, Drew, Claire, Wesley, and Elisa Leighton.

She was raised in an Army family and attended 14 different schools throughout her childhood before returning to attend college at The University of Maryland. Connie met her husband, Sam, while working for Heinz in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and they were married on April 14, 1961. She lived throughout the northeast United States until moving with her family to Houston in 1977. Houston would become the place she would call home for the remainder of her life.

Throughout her life, she desired to help others and make her community a better place, and she was involved in many different groups and organizations. As a member of her local Auxiliary group, she volunteered at Houston Northwest Hospital for 22 years. Connie was also a member of Hands of Friendship and Faith Circle. She was an avid tennis player and spectator, enjoyed traveling, and played Bunco and Bridge with her friends. Connie was a faithful member of John Wesley United Methodist Church for 34 years, and she found comfort and delight in her weekly Sunday School class.

While she enjoyed many aspects of her life, her role as grandmother, or Gigi as her grandchildren knew her, may have been the most fulfilling. Gigi loved spending quality time with all of her grandchildren, and she was so proud of them as people. She was able to experience each of their births and formative years, and she will be forever remembered fondly for the loving and supportive person that she was.

A memorial service will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 5830 Bermuda Dunes Drive, Houston, Texas 77069 on Friday, May 19 at 10:00 a.m. For those who are so inclined, the family has established a memorial fund for contributions that will be used to make donations to several organizations Connie supported during her life. Contributions can be made to the Connie Achtzehn Memorial Fund, 12619 Garden Road, Pearland, Texas 77581. Connie died of complications following hip surgery.
