July 20, 1932 - February 1, 2023
Audrey A. Garlitz, 90, of Mechanicsburg passed away peacefully on February 1, 2023, after a brief illness. Audrey was born on July 20, 1932, in New Castle, PA to the late Ernest and Eleanor "Kelly" (Locke) Brooks. She graduated from Shady Side Nursing School in Pittsburgh, PA.
Early on, she worked in labor and delivery at hospitals in Pittsburgh. After she married, she worked at Memorial Hospital and also for Dr. Whitworth in Cumberland, MD. In the mid-1970s, after her daughters were in middle and high schools, she returned to nursing and worked for Holy Spirit Hospital as the night supervisor, retiring in 1996.
Reading was one of Audrey's true passions. She was actively involved as a volunteer with the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg and worked on the Jubilee Day Booksale for years. She was also a docent at the Governor's Mansion until the pandemic in 2020. She enjoyed giving tours of the mansion and coordinating the semi-annual docent trips to tour other historic locations around Pennsylvania. She was a member of the "made up" Golfing Grannies Golf Team and had many years of golfing fun and laughter with her girlfriends. She also met up with friends for card club, and spent much time laughing, eating, and enjoying each other's company, and oh yes, playing cards. Over the years, she volunteered with various organizations such as the Girl Scouts and the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church. She was a volunteer at heart and offered a hand of service where needed.
She enjoyed time with family and friends at their River Place on the Juniata River, Thompsontown, PA, watching Penn State football games and tailgating, and attending her grandkids activities and events.
Audrey was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Donald Garlitz. She is survived by daughter, Nancy Kimble of Westminster, MD (Bob); daughter, Susan Peter of New Holland, PA (Jerry); and grandchildren: Dr. Julia (Peter) Thayer (Evan), Bryan Peter (Celina), Dr. William Weisgerber (fiancée Mary Click), and Tyler Kimble.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2023 at the Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, PA, with visitation from 2:00 PM until the time of services.
Gifts in memory of Audrey A. Garlitz are requested to the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church, 300 East Simpson Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055-6596 or the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, 16 N. Walnut Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
